Mise-en-scene blog tasks
1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.
Fight Club-
CLAMPS-
Costume- The woman is wearing a wide hat, dark sunglasses, a flower ring on her middle finger and a dark long sleeve jacket or top. All of her dark clothes and her face hidden behind her sunglasses suggests that she may be a modern representation of the femme fatale character. Symbolising to the audience that she may not be trust worthy.
Lighting- The lighting seems to be quite green- suggesting that the scene or the movie may be illusory.
Actor, movement ,placement, expression - The actor is blowing smoke from her mouth inside a waiting room, suggesting that she is care free since she doesn't go outside to smoke, she is also quite expressionless. She is placed in the centre of the scene as well as the medium shot of her face, suggests that she is an important character.
Make-up - The only make-up she seems to be wearing is lipstick, which portrays her as a character who cares about her appearance.
Props- The only prop used is the cigarette in her hand
Setting- The setting seems to be in a waiting room, maybe a hospital.
2) Find TWO film or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama). Embed them in your blogpost and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.
Costume- All characters are wearing dark clothes (greys and blacks), conveying the dark themes throughout the movie. Hoop earrings, bracelets, necklace, belly button ring and tongue rings.
Lighting- It seems as if it's midday, however the lighting is quite blue, due to colour grading. The lighting seems to be low-key, due to the shadows being cast , I doubt any of the lighting is artificial as I can see light coming from the backdoor in the kitchen so therefore the lighting is natural.
Actor, movement ,placement, expression - The main girl is constantly walking around, unable to keep still, suggesting that she is trying to run away from her problems; physically and mentally. At the start the two younger girls are quite close to each other physically suggesting that they may be friends or know each other on a personal level. The younger blonde girl gets quite close to the older blonde woman as she tries to intimidate her, conveying that their relationship is quite rocky and unstable. The expression on the blonde girls face at first is quite joyous due to the smile on her face, however that is a deceptive smile as she tries to hide all her wrongs. When she tries to intimidate the older blonde woman her face gets very serious, she is no longer smiling and her eyes are direct in a crazed state.
Make-up - The make-up both the young girls are wearing is minimal, t show their young faces. However they're both wearing dark eyeliner on their waterline, mascara , smokey eye-shadow and pinkish lip-gloss. Both older women are wearing no make-up.
Props- The props used are the green mug that the older blonde woman(presumably the mother) is holding as well as the cigarette in her hand.
Setting- The setting seems to be a suburban house.
Costume- With the employed family, they are all wearing dark clothes( blacks and dark greys), insinuating that they are less important and seen as background characters in the scene. This coincides with the costume in Thirteen-although with different reasoning. In contrast to the employed family , the family that employed them are in lighter colours, brighter even(light greys, sky blues and pinks). Insinuating that they are more important due to the bolder colours- in contrast to Thirteen.
Lighting- This lighting is also low-key, however it seems to be placed more intentionally than in Thirteen. All the lighting used are from lights around the house- it is all apart of the setting. In comparison with thirteen the lighting used is from outside the setting.
Actor, movement ,placement, expression - All of the actors expressions are smiley- happy even, they are all in separate rooms up until the parents come home. Contrary to Thirteen who's actors only smiled to deceive others.
Make-up - None of the characters are wearing any noticeable make-up.
Props- In comparison to Thirteen which had only two noticeable props. The props used are the fruits that the maid carries to each room , text book, note pad and pencils; the tent, colouring pencils and paper; as well as the boxes brought into the home.
Setting- The setting is the house - it is bigger than the house in Thirteen and has more rooms in the scene.
